Take Off the Mask and Let Them See Your Smile
For the record, I believe that masks work to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, and I believe we are going through a moment in our history where masks are needed.
With that out of the way, masks absolutely bug the hell out of me. Not just wearing them, but seeing them.
I hate them. I wear one, but I hate it.
I hate seeing other people in them, too.
Yes, we should wear them, especially if you fit a profile where this virus is particularly dangerous. But I feel anxious and a little angry when I go out...and I figured out why.
Masks... brace yourself for this profundity ... cover your face.
I'll let that soak in.
When I'm around a bunch of masked humans, all I see are eyes. I don't see laughter, smiles, or sneers. I don't see personality.
I see robots.
Yesterday, when Emma at Trader Joes scanned my groceries, she was upbeat and pleasant -- at least her voice -- I couldn't see it, though. That really bugged me.
So here's my advice to you, the content producer: When you're alone and safe, take off the mask and record your content with a smile.
Let your people see you smile, laugh, and make funny faces. That's what I want to see, and that's what the world wants to see.
We need to see each other again.
