It's On! Your Job vs. AI: Three Ways to Survive

Over the weekend I enjoyed dinner with close friends, one of whom leads a marketing department at a prominent Twin Cities corporation. Our conversation delved into the world of AI, mainly focusing on chat GPT. She mentioned that her department is increasingly exploring how Chat GPT can support its operations as they face downsizing. Recently, they had to let a couple of employees go, including a copywriter, leaving her with more responsibilities.

She has already started using AI to edit, inputting full text to ensure all errors are detected and corrected. Although she is considering AI for writing assistance, she remains cautious about its accuracy with facts. As an AI enthusiast myself, I watch numerous YouTube videos from AI experts and am particularly intrigued by prompt engineering, which allows users to design specific commands for chat GPT. The level of detail in the commands directly influences the quality of the results, leading to more authentic and genuine copy.

How Is AI Being Used Now?

Before getting into how to protect your job in a world of AI, here are five ways marketing teams are incorporating artificial intelligence:

  1. Automated content generation

  2. Personalized email campaigns

  3. Social media scheduling and analysis

  4. Chatbots for customer service and engagement

  5. Data-driven insights for audience targeting and segmentation

How to Future Proof Your Career

As AI continues to transform the marketing landscape, it is crucial for marketers to adapt and develop new skills to stay relevant and maintain job security. Here are three ways marketers can safeguard their careers in the era of AI:

  1. Embrace and Learn AI Technologies: Stay up-to-date with the latest AI tools and technologies relevant to marketing, and invest time in learning how to use them effectively. By becoming proficient with AI-powered tools, you demonstrate your value and adaptability as a marketer, positioning yourself as an indispensable asset to your team or organization.

  2. Develop Critical and Creative Thinking Skills: While AI can assist with data analysis and automation, human creativity and critical thinking remain essential in marketing. Focus on honing your creative problem-solving abilities, your capacity to develop innovative strategies, and your skill in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with your target audience. These uniquely human qualities will help you stand out in a field increasingly dominated by automation.

  3. Strengthen Your Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Skills: AI lacks the ability to truly understand and empathize with human emotions, making emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills critical for marketers. Develop your emotional intelligence by becoming more self-aware, improving your empathy, and enhancing your communication skills. By cultivating strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders, you solidify your role as an invaluable team member.

By embracing AI technologies, enhancing your critical and creative thinking skills, and strengthening your emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, you can position yourself as a versatile and essential marketer in the rapidly evolving world of AI-driven marketing.
